Dhaka Premier League (DPL): Shakib Al Hasan involved in heated arguments with Umpires, Shameful.

Dhaka Premier League (DPL): Senior Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, during the game between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited, got engaged in a heated argument with the on-field umpires. The incident is termed “shameful sportsmanship” amongst the cricket fraternities as happened twice in one inning of Dhaka Premier League.

On one occasion, Shakib kicked out the stumps after the on-field umpire ruled out his LBW appeal against Mushfiqur Rahim while on another, he uprooted the whole set of stumps and flung them to ground after umpires called for covers as rain came down.

Furious Shakib, was not happy with Umpires calling the covers as just one ball was remaining in the sixth over.

The video clips circulating over the internet showed Shakib getting into a word war against Abahani Limited coach Khaled Mahmud, who apparently is also Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director.

The actual reason why Shakib was angry at the umpires is not known. Looking at the scoreboard, Shakib’s team Mohammedan Sporting Club was way ahead of their opponents. And when the play was called off for a short duration, even if the DLS rule was applied, Mohammedan Sporting Club looked way ahead in the equation and could have won the game easily.

The unfortunate game was later won by Shakib’s team Mohammedan Sporting Club.

Soon after the completion of the game, Shakib issued an apology from his side and wrote on his Facebook page: “Dear fans and followers, I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home,” the message read. “An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens, unfortunately. I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials and organizing committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won’t be repeating this again in the future. Thanks and love you all.”

Kazi Inam Ahmed, the chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), said the report from the Umpires is still awaited. As soon as we get the report, we will take a further call on the “unfortunate event” and take appropriate actions against the cricketer.

“We saw there was a lot of excitement in this Abahani-Mohammedan game, and there were some incidents involving Shakib Al Hasan. It was streamed live on Facebook and YouTube, so I am sure all of you saw it. It is unfortunate. We expect players to keep their emotions under control even in the heated moments in cricket,” Ahmed said. “This is not the example we want to see from Bangladesh’s professional, international players.

“Like international matches, we also have a playing-control team, which consists of the match referee and umpires. We expect their report by tonight. The rules are in place, so whatever comes [out], we will act accordingly.”
